Today we celebrate International Women's Day!

International Women's Day is a holiday celebrated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the women's rights movement. IWD gives focus to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. (Wikipedia)

My favorite women are all the Bond girls from the Sean Connery era and I celebrate all of them!

The Day of St. Fernando.

Every May 30th is Saint Fernando's Day which is my namesake.  I used to celebrate it every year until 1973, when my son was born and I realized my Name Day was a pointless celebration, but nonetheless, I always take a moment to pay my respects to my grandfather FERNANDO LLERA MATEOS who passed away on December 9th, 1956, when I was only 5 years old and whom I still remember fondly.

Here are some historical facts about the name Fernando:
Ferdinand III (Spanish: Fernando; 1199/1201 – 30 May 1252), called the Saint (el Santo), was King of Castile from 1217 and King of LeΓ³n from 1230 as well as King of Galicia from 1231.[1] He was the son of Alfonso IX of LeΓ³n and Berenguela of Castile.  Saint Ferdinand is the patron saint of Seville, Aranjuez, San Fernando de Henares, Maspalomas, Pivijay, and of several other localities. He is also the patron of the Spanish Army's Corps of Engineers, and engineers generally.

NOT 105 YEARS OLD

I really appreciate the congratulatory comments but I want to stress the fact that it is
the newspaper I'm working for that turned 105 this year and not me!

Excelsior newspaper has been publishing my editorial cartoons since August, 2006.
Today marks the 105th anniversary of this legendary publishing company which was founded back in 1917 and I am very proud to be counted among the many contributing journalists, reporters and cartoonists who have helped to make this paper, one of the best and most relied upon news source in the country.
Happy 105th Anniversary!

TURNING 70 TODAY...

Turning 70 is an important milestone not just for me but I guess for anyone who is lucky enough to get this far in life. I thank my lucky stars in looking after me all these strenuous years where I've had my ups and downs, like everybody else, but where I've also managed to keep my sense of humor, my sanity, my health and my family and friends who have tolerated me for lo, so many years!

Hopefully, this elevator will still keep climbing a few more floors above!
